TalentLMS lets you create multiple “learning paths”. This allows you to link the completion of one course with access to another course.
With learning paths, you can easily build connections between courses, allowing your Learners to take them in a predefined order. Courses organized into a learning path can be considered part of a subject or a bigger topic.
For example, if you want to allow access to course Y only if the Learner first completes course X, follow the steps below to define the learning path.
There are two ways to create learning paths:
A. By specifying prerequisite courses for your course.
B. By Gamification Level.
Let’s look at both methods below.
A. By specifying prerequisite courses for your course:
1. Sign in to your TalentLMS account as an Instructor and go to Courses (1).
2. Locate the course you want to update and click Edit (2).
3. Select Course options (3).
4. A drawer will open on the right side of your screen. Go to Rules and Paths (4).
5. Scroll down to Learning path (5) and choose one or more courses as prerequisites from the drop-down menu.
| Note: You can select more than one course as a prerequisite. Learners will be able to complete the prerequisite courses in any order before they are able to take the one you are creating the learning path for. |
6. Click Save to save your changes.
If you wish to set more than one learning path option for a course, click Add alternative path (6) and enter an alternative set of prerequisites. The Learner can now attend and complete either set of courses before accessing the one you are creating the learning path for.
| Note: You can select up to four alternative paths. |
The Learner should now attend and complete the courses one by one, even if they have been registered to all of them.
If Learners try to access a course without having completed the previous one(s) they will not be able to start it. Instead, the Learner will see the Restricted tag.
By selecting any course, the Learner will see information about its content, along with a section mentioning any prerequisite courses (1) and a button (2) to direct you to that section.
B. By Gamification Level:
Another way to create learning paths is to use the Gamification feature. If you enable Levels, then Learners will need to reach the gamification level specified for your course to take it. Otherwise, it’ll show up as restricted, with a Level X required / Unlocked on Level X message.
To configure the level setting for your course:
1. Sign in to your TalentLMS account as an Instructor and go to Courses.
2. Locate the course you want to update and click Edit.
3. Select Course options (1).
4. A drawer will open on the right side of your screen. Go to the Availability tab (2) and type the level of your choice in the Level field (3).
5. Click Save.
If the Learner’s gamification level is lower than the level required to access a course, a Level X required message (4) will appear next to a lock icon when a user opens the course.
